Breaking Barriers: Why we are sponsoring St Joseph’s All Abilities cricket teams

At AndrewSMcNeil.com and Yarmouth Group, we believe that the heart of a strong community is found at the local sports club. That is why we are incredibly proud to celebrate our official sponsorship of the St Joseph’s Cricket Club Newtown, All Abilities team for the 2025/26 season.

Sport is about more than just competing; it is about belonging. By supporting this team, we aren't just putting our logo on a website, we are investing in a program that ensures everyone, regardless of their physical or intellectual circumstances, has the chance to hear the crack of the bat and feel the joy of being part of a caring and inclusive community sports team.

What is All Abilities Cricket?

All Abilities Cricket is a modified version of the game designed to be truly inclusive. Originating in Australia in the early 2000s, the movement grew from a desire to ensure that people with disabilities—intellectual, physical, or sensory—could participate in a regular cricket season.

The core philosophy is ‘Inclusion for All’. While the passion for the game remains the same as any Saturday afternoon match, the All Abilities format introduces several key adaptations:

  1. Modified Rules: Games are often shortened, or rules are adjusted to allow more bounces when bowling, use of substitute runners, or different scoring systems to ensure everyone can compete and succeed.

  2. Specialised Equipment: To make the game more accessible, teams may use lighter bats, softer or brightly coloured balls for better visibility, and even balls with internal rattles for players who are blind or have low vision.

  3. Diverse Pathways: The program caters to everyone from beginners in ‘Foundation’ programs focused on fun, to high-performance athletes competing in formal associations such as the Melbourne All Abilities Cricket Association (‘MAACA’).

More Than Just a Game

The impact of All Abilities programs extends far beyond the boundary rope. Research shows that 93% of participants feel a stronger sense of team belonging, and 86% report increased self-confidence through their involvement with cricket.

For our club St Joseph’s, these All Abilities player foster a more inclusive club environment and support our existing family-friendly culture. For the players, it offers a vital social network and the chance to represent their community and sometimes even progressing to represent their state or country in national cricket inclusion championships.
